Workshop Overview

“The Return of Karl Marx” workshop offers participants a lively and engaging exploration of Karl Marx’s life, ideas, and enduring relevance. The session begins with introductions and a brief discussion of participants’ interests in the topic, followed by an overview of Marx’s life, his work with Friedrich Engels, and his analysis of capitalism. Participants will then experience the theater play Marx in Soho, performed by Gert Tjoelker, which brings Marx to life with wit, humor, and compassion while reflecting on his insights and their continued significance.

After the performance, participants engage in a reflective discussion over coffee, sharing thoughts and exploring how Marx’s analysis of capitalism has informed social movements and activism worldwide. The workshop concludes with reflections on the lessons from Marx’s life and ideas, emphasizing their relevance for understanding society, historical materialism, and pathways for social change today.
